Dr. Sumner and her team are pleased to be able to offer dental services for infants, children, and adolescents. Pediatric dentistry is an area of specialization that focuses on the treatment of children from birth to adolescence with a concentration on growth, development, and behavioral guidance for both healthy and special needs children. Dr. Sumner is specially trained to care for children using methods that promote strong foundations in prevention and home care. Prevention and education are important in our practice, and we take seriously that you and your child need to understand how to take charge of and protect your child’s oral health. Dr. Sumner and staff are always available to answer questions about your child’s dental needs and the services we can provide for your child’s ideal treatment.

We offer a wide range of services to meet the needs of your child, including: Comprehensive Examinations, Surgical Procedures, Diagnostic & Preventative Services, Emergency Care, Restorative Procedures, Habit & Athletic Appliances, Cosmetic Procedures, and Early Orthodontics.

Your child should have a comprehensive dental examination regularly, which includes a thorough examination of the teeth and gums. We use the findings from our examination to formulate a complete diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plan for your child.

Recommendations for treatment are explained at a consultation time set aside specifically for you and your child. The consultation can take place during the initial appointment or can be scheduled as a separate appointment at the doctor’s request. Our goal is to ensure that you receive the best possible information concerning your child’s treatment options. The time we invest in patient education enables us to deliver the best possible outcome for your child’s dental treatment.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER

  • It is recommended that children begin their dental checkups as soon as their first tooth erupts and no later than their first birthday.
  • Children should maintain regular visits to their dentist to clean the teeth as well as diagnose any issues.
  • Delayed diagnosis of dental disease can lead to more extensive and costly care.
  • The health of your child’s teeth and mouth are linked to his or her overall health and growth.
  • Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth.
  • Dr. Sumner’s office can apply fluoride to the teeth as a gel or varnish. These contain a prescription level of fluoride.
  • It is certainly important for infants and children between the ages of 6 months and 16 years to be exposed to fluoride. This is the time period during which the primary and permanent teeth come in.
